Our experts answer some frequently asked questions.

If you don't find the answer to your question here, please contact us at service@sleepeasyrx.com
or toll free 1-866-921-CPAP (2727).

1. Which way does my disposable white filter go into my CPAP?
For Respironics units, place the white filter with the plastic/mesh side in first so that it’s touching your CPAP (remember, plastic touching plastic). Then place your gray filter on top of the white filter. If you do not have a Respironics unit, please call us for assistance. Refer to your replacement schedule for how often to replace your filters.

2. I’m using the nasal pillow style mask. How do I prevent soreness in my nostrils?
First ask yourself: "How old are my nasal pillows?" Nasal pillows should be replaced every 30 days. You can also try Pretz nasal spray (and can be found by clicking on the "Comfort Items" on the left side of this page). You could also try alternating with another mask style until you acclimate to a pillow style mask.

3. How do I place my Smart Card into my CPAP system?
If the Smart Card slot is vertical: the white side of the card should be facing the filter with the white arrow/gold microchip going in first. If the Smart Card slot is horizontal: the blue side of the card should be facing up with the white arrow/gold microchip going in first.

4. Are there any special instructions for my mask?
Yes. Your mask should be washed daily in warm water with a gentle, mild soap (like Ivory), but not dishwashing liquid and not a soap that is antibacterial, contains bleach or oxyclean. Some masks have an inner and an outer cushion that must be separated and allowed to air dry while not in use. Additionally, some masks have a gray foam inner cushion that should not be submerged in water. You can refer to the package instructions for fitting, cleaning, assembly and disassembly tips. Some even have a DVD for use and care. For your convenience, try our CPAP mask cleaner located under CPAP Accessories and Cleaners. Please contact us if you have questions or if you get soreness from your mask.

5. Sometimes I get too much water in my tubing or mask, other times it feels too dry. How do I adjust my heater/humidifier?
Please call us to assist you with this concern.
Consider these other suggestions for reducing condensation in your tubing:
- Tuck the tubing under your blankets to insulate it from the cold air.
- Purchase Insulated Tubing Cover (click on CPAP Accessories and Cleaners in the left column.)

6. Can I put anything in my water chamber other than distilled water?
No. The manufacturer recommends only using distilled water.

7. I feel too hot with my mask on and it’s hard to fall asleep. I already have my heater/humidifier on the lowest setting.
You can try refrigerated distilled water in your water chamber to start. You can also try turning off the heater, however, you may feel dryness in your airway from reduced humidity.

8. Why do I wake up feeling like no air is blowing?
You have probably adjusted to the pressure of your CPAP. This is expected and a normal feeling. Try dropping your mouth open to make sure there is still air blowing or create a mask leak by slightly lifting the mask off your face. If your unit is not blowing air and malfunctioning, call us as soon as possible.

9. I wake with a dry scratchy throat.
You may need to increase the humidity setting to provide more moisture. Also, it’s a good idea to check that your filters are clean.

10. What is an interface?
An interface is any kind of mask. It could be a full face mask that covers your nose and mouth. It could be a nasal pillow style mask that blows the air directly into your nostrils or it could be the nasal mask that covers your nose only to provide pressure from your CPAP.

11. What is a BiPAP or BiLevel?
BiPAP and BiLevel are the same thing. They are, however, different from CPAP. CPAP is the same amount of pressure (or air) delivered when you inhale and exhale. BiPAP also delivers pressure when you inhale and exhale, except when you exhale the pressure is reduced making therapy easier to tolerate. If you are having difficulty adjusting to your CPAP therapy, your doctor may approve a BiPAP for you to use. Please call us if you would like more information on BiPAP therapy.

12. What should I do if my mask breaks or my machine quits working?
Call us right away at toll free 1-866-921-CPAP (2727). We have after-hours emergency service if you need assistance on weekends or after normal business hours. You must call the toll free number and leave a mesage including your return phone number for an after hours call.

13. Is it harmful if I do not use my CPAP for a night?
Your sleep apnea will return if you do not use your CPAP, therefore, we recommend using your unit every time you sleep, even during naps (unless you are experiencing a sinus infection or other upper respiratory infection).

14. Does CPAP give me extra oxygen?
No. The air or pressure you are getting from your CPAP is just like room air. Some people with heart or lung disease may need to add oxygen to their CPAP if prescribed by their doctor.
